On Tuesday, October 31, a truck attack in Manhattan claimed the lives of eight bikers and joggers. The attacker was 29-year-old Sayfullo Saipov, who had been living in the United states since 2010. It has been the most fatal terrorist attack since 9/ 11.

The attacker rented the truck used in the attack from a Home Depot at Passaic, N.J. According to The New York Times, the truck was rented  at 2:06 PM and passed over George Washington bridge into Manhattan at 2:43 PM. The truck entered the Hudson River bike path around 3:04 PM driving at almost 60 miles an hour. The truck stopped when it then crashed into a school bus near Stuyvesant High School four minutes after the driver had started the rampage. Saipov caused damage to roughly 20 city blocks.

The attacker then got out of the truck, armed with a pellet gun and a paintball gun, shouting “God is great.”  He was shot by a police officer Ryan Nash, who fired two bullets into his abdomen. Saipov was hospitalized and is being charged.

Two of the eight victims were Americans while the other were tourists. According to the Argentine foreign ministry, the victims, Hernán Diego Mendoza, Diego Enrique Angelini, Alejandro Damián Pagnucco, Ariel Erlij, and Hernán Ferrucci, were tourists from Argentina who were celebrating their 30th high school anniversary in America when they were attacked.  Ann Laure Decadt was another tourist from Belgium. The other two victims of the attack, Nicholas Cleeves and Dolan Drake, were Americans. At least 12 additional people were hurt during the attack.

The attacker does not seem to have any direct ties or support from ISIS, but he was influenced by their videos to the plan the attack. (According to AlJazeera, the video that particularly inspired him was one where an ISIS leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was questioning what Muslims in America were doing after the Muslim killings in Iraq.)  There were notes found near the attack that showed that he had pledged the attack to ISIS.  It said that  “The Islamic State will endure forever.” He is thought to have directly followed the instructions that ISIS had published on its social media channels on how to carry such an attack. Saipov also requested the ISIS flag be placed in his hospital room.

President Donald Trump tweeted that Saipov was “a very sick and deranged person” and that he needed to be given the death penalty. He offered his condolences to the victims later that day, stating “My thoughts, condolences and prayers to the victims and families of the New York City terrorist attack. God and your country are with you!” He also stated that he wanted to end the “Diversity Visa Lottery Program” and wanted to make entry to the country merit-based.

New Yorkers have established memorials for the victims.
