Learn more about the 100 year Celebration HERE!
This year marks the one-hundredth year of Mayfield Middle School, which was built in 1924. So now, in its centennial year, MMS is celebrated as staff and administrators plan ways to celebrate this occasion.
Principal Paul Destino expressed pride in the school’s milestone. He noted that some events the staff has planned for this include a birthday bash, a celebration with retired teachers, a spirit week for the students, a pep rally, and a whole-school photograph spelling out 100. One spirit day will involve all students being invited to dress up as one-hundred-year-olds. Other themed events will involve different teams representing different decades.
Another celebratory event is the Mayfield Centennial Birthday Bash planned for parents and staff only. The event will be held October 5 at the American Croatian Lodge in Eastlake. Tickets can be purchased for $45 per person and will include food, drinks, and music from the band Disco Inferno.
Since the building’s opening in 1924, many changes have been made to the building, and it has served the community in different capacities. Originally a high school, it then changed to become a junior high, then a Jewish day school, a community center, and in the end, the Mayfield Middle School it is today. From its early days of chalkboards and row-filled classes to today’s modern learning environment, it has continued to grow and adapt to meet the its students. It has seen around 20 different renovations and advancements. A walk through the building will bring glimpses of both the old and the new. The original columns and stairs at the entry that walks into the old brown tiles give an idea of the building’s early years, while the new Upper Learning Space with its flat screen TVs, glass-walled conference rooms, and open natural lighting offer a look at what’s new.
For a more detailed history of the building’s history of renovations and changes, see this former Wildcat Voice article.
Another way the school is celebrating its long history is with social media posts providing a look back at certain years. These posts were curated from the stash of old yearbooks held in the high school’s Alumni room. They offer a fun glimpse at how the classrooms, hairstyles, and fashions have changed over the building’s ten decades. A website has also been put together to showcase these photos and to collect favorite memories from community members, students, and teachers.
Happy Birthday, Mayfield Middle School! Here’s to a successful one-hundred-year lifetime and the hopes of serving the Mayfield community for many more years to come.
