The Atlas Movie Theater located in Eastgate Plaza closed on July 14. Plans have been announced to open a Dave & Buster’s Sports Bar and Restaurant in its place.
Former owners released a statement saying, “Atlas Cinemas would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our loyal customers, community, dedicated staff and management over the years.”
The decision to close Atlas Cinema was apparent the shopping center’s. It seems the closure is in an effort to maximize profits brought into the shopping center. Mayfield Heights Economic Development Director Jeremy Rowan said, “We have made a forward-looking business decision to bring in Dave & Busters to Eastgate Shopping Center. Trends have shown that the long-term prospects for Dave & Busters are brighter than that of the movie theater segment.”
Rowan also added, “It is always unfortunate when a business closes,” said , “but the city is hopeful that Dave & Buster’s will provide residents and visitors with a quality place to enjoy some fun food, play games and watch sports. Dave & Buster’s will be a welcome addition to the city’s business community.”
Dave & Busters is an arcade that also offers large TVs for watching sports events and has a full bar and restaurant. Their website advertises, “Arcade, tabletop, air hockey or traditional gaming, Dave & Buster’s has it all.” They have also begun adding newer games such as VR. Their website shares, “Each store has more state of the art games than ever, more mouthwatering menu items and the most innovative drinks anywhere. From wings to steaks, we’ve got whatever suits your appetite and our premium bar assures we’re stocked to satisfy! Plus, you can watch your game on one of our massive HDTVs with epic stadium sound.”
Despite the excitement around a new entertainment venue opening, many Mayfield staff and students are disappointed to see the movie theater go. Mr. Dick shared, “It was a good field trip opportunity and something our students looked forward to.” He added that the theater was always very flexible with teachers trying to plan a reward and said “it is going to be tricky to find places to go that are as close and affordable.”
