Officer Jacob Derbin was found dead on East 211th Street in Euclid, Ohio after being ambushed.
On the night of May 11, 2024, night Officer Jacob Derbin went with other officers to investigate a disturbance in the area. According to police, a woman called and said that her child’s father was threatening to hurt her and her mother. The woman told the officers that he was nearby, so the officers went to search for him. But while Derbin was alone, he was ambushed by the man and shot. Derbin was then rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead according to ABC News.
The suspect of this crime is 24-year-old Deshawn Anthony Vaughn. Previously, Vaughn was in prison for 4 years for assault and then three years ago he was in prison again for having a gun and stolen property according to Fox 8.
Vaughn didn’t surrender, and after he shot Derbin, he ran to an apartment complex located in Shaker Heights–beginning an hours-long standoff. Other officers had seen where he had gone and they sent drones after him, which Derbin shot. But later he was found dead in the apartment complex according to Clevlend19.com. The cause of Vaughn’s death is uncertain; it could have been self-inflicted or by the police.
Jacob Derbin’s memorial was held on May 18, 2024, at St. Columbkille Church. Derbin, a 23-year-old white male, joined the Euclid Police Department in July of 2023. Derbin’s father Vince Trusso was also an Euclid police officer according to Cleveland19.com. During the memorial, hundreds of officers lined up in front of the entrance to pay their respects. Some members of the community also showed up to the memorial to honor Derbin.
On May 19, Officer Derbin’s family was invited to the Guardian’s game. Derbin’s father Vince Trusso threw out the first pitch against the Minnesota Twins. Players of the Guardians also greeted other family members of Derbin.
In 2024, the number of police officers that were shot in the line of duty has gone up.
According to Cleveland.com, in 2024 around 20 officers have already been shot and killed nationwide, which is up 25% from 2023.
