On March 1, 2024, the movie Dune 2 was released in theaters. The 2-hour and 46-minute movie is the second part of Dune–both based on the books by author Frank Herbert–a six novel series.
The film cost $190 million dollars to make but had made nearly four times that much by the time of publication. It made $82.2 million it its opening weekend according to CNN and in total has made over $708 million.
The PG-13 film has been well-received buy audiences. Its Rotten Tomato score is 95%, and its IMDB’s score was 9.4/10.
To watch Dune 2 you would have had to watch the first one, because the second movie doesn’t explain the concepts that you would need in order to understand the movie, so it is recommended to watch the first movie first.
Dune is about a man named Paul Atreides who is played by Timothée Chalamet. Paul Atreides is a noble in the House of Atreides and now he is the last noble after his father Duke Leto Atreides was murdered. The House of Atreides is one of the Great Houses of an empire which is known as the Imperium. Later his mother Rebecca Ferguson drinks the Water of Life it shows her many things and she finds out about her birth and turns out she is related to their enemy. According to USA Today,“he’s related to the Harkonnens – his mother Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) is revealed to be the Baron’s secret daughter, which even Lady Jessica didn’t know.”
In Dune there are people known as the Fremen who live on the land of Arrakis. On Arrakis, there is spice in the sand, and the spice is important to everyone in the movie. Most people go to Arrakis to harvest spice because it is essential for space travel and makes people filthy rich. The Fremen use the spice in their food, clothing, and rugs. All of the Fremen have blue eyes and the cause of their blue eyes is consuming large amounts of spice according to Today.com. The spice on the land of Arrakis has many health benefits as well such as having a life span four times more than the lifespan of a human, aging slower, and being immune to most diseases.
On the land of Arrakis, there are worm-like creatures known as sandworms. Sandworms live underground but when they feel any vibrations they come up and swallow anyone or thing in its path. The sandworms can also be alerted by walking so the Fremen have made a special walk known as the sand walking to not alert any sandworms. The Fremen also use the sandworms as transportation.
The actor Austin Butler who played Feyd-Rauyha Harkonnen almost fainted on set because it was 110 degrees causing heat stroke. Also, some other people on the crew also got heat stroke and passed out.
In the movie, the Freman call Paul the name Mahdi, which is a prophet who they believe will lead them to paradise. In the movie Paul shows all of the signs that he is Mahdi the prophet who they have been waiting for, and now that they believe Paul is that prophet, so now they follow him. This leads to Paul starting the holy war to get the Great Houses to accept his rule all because Paul believes that he is the Fremen’s savior.
