Laufey is a singer who brought back jazz in a completely different way. Her album Bewitched was released on September 8th, 2023, and won a GRAMMY on February 4th, 2024. On April 26th, 2024, she released a highly-anticipated deluxe version of this album with four new songs, including “Bored,” “Trouble,” “It Could Happen To You,” and her single, “Goddess,” from which the album takes the name “Bewitched: The Goddess Edition.”
With every new album that Laufey releases, she likes to tease one of the songs by posting snippets of it on all of her social media accounts, and the song for this album was “Bored.” Before its release, she has also played the full song at multiple concerts. The story behind “Bored” is a man who can’t stop talking about himself during a date she went on. However, Laufey has written about this topic before, leading her fans to think that this is a sequel to a song called “James” from her first ever album, Typical of Me EP. Bored is already somewhat trending on social media, because of the lyric “Baby keep talking, but nobody’s listening.”
Another song from the album is “Trouble,” which she has also posted a snippet of on TikTok prior to its release. However, a fan account posted a video using the song to bring attention to it, and Laufey commented that the demo is different from the full song, which has obviously been proven correct! In one or two of her recent concerts, she played the full song, in which she switched around and changed some of the lyrics from the snippet. For example, the lyric “The worst is that we never were” was changed to “The trouble is we never were.” She has also improved the instrumental part, giving the song a completely different, yet amazing vibe!
The third new song from the album, “It Could Happen To You,” is a cover of a Chet Baker song. Every time Laufey drops a new album, she likes to do a cover of an old song. For example, on the original version of this album, she made a cover of the song “Misty,” a song by Erroll Garner. She has also posted a snippet of this song on her TikTok account back in 2020, but the official version is markedly different from the snippet! She has changed the tempo to be much faster, and instead of her plucking her cello, as done in the teaser, she has played piano in a way that’s totally different from the original version of the song! She has also added a verse of her scatting, because it’s something she loves to do in some of her songs.
The final new song on the album is one that has already been released. Her hit single, “Goddess,” is also one of the title songs of this album. She claims that this song is “her most honest song yet,” meaning she can relate to this the most out of any other song she’s written. Recently, she released a music video for this song, in which many people have found some references to another song from her first album, titled “Magnolia.”
The album came out around than a week ago, so we won’t have to wait too long for answers. Was this album underwhelming to some? Overwhelming? The best album of all time? We’ll find out very soon.
