To Shop or Not to Shop: Which Stores are Open on Thanksgiving?

In the year 1932, the tradition of Black Friday was born. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving–also known as the first day of traditional Christmas shopping. This day is used for people to go out late at night or early in the morning to reap the benefits of huge sales. People rush, push, and sometimes go down trying to reach for their items. Even though this day is full of chaos, at least we saved a few bucks.

Many stores have sparked controversy by opening on Thanksgiving to give shoppers a head start. According to ETCNBC, Target and Wal-Mart, which thrive on door buster sales, will start their sales on Thursday. Dollar General reports that it will be open at 7 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day as well. Department stores Kohl’s, JC Penney’s, and Macy’s will also be open for the holiday.

Statistics show that consumers have taken advantage of holiday shopping opportunities in the past. In 2013, Wal-Mart said that more than 22 million customers came to its stores on Thanksgiving. According to the National Retail Federation, 32 percent of customers who shopped over Black Friday weekend did so on Thanksgiving Day.

But shopping on Thanksgiving doesn’t sit well with everyone.  According to ETCNBC, when several major retailers opened  on Thanksgiving Day last year, it resulted in numerous online petitions. Even though many customers shopped on Thanksgiving and businesses earned big sales, employees aren’t so happy. They complain of losing time with family, missing out on out-of-town events, or having to make accommodations to make Thanksgiving dinner work.

According to Newsela, many stores are closing this year after being open for several years. Among these are even big-name stores like Dillard’s, Nordstrom, Costco, TJ Maxx, IKEA, and Bed Bath & Beyond. Even the nations largest mall, The Mall of America in Minneapolis, which houses 520 stores, announced in October that it would be closed.

Some that are closing say they are doing so out of respect for the holiday. But The New York Times reported that overall sales have decreased $10million over the last three years, so the decision may be strategic for some.
