On November 8, Mayfield voters passed Issue 115, a $6.9-million levy for the Mayfield City School district.

The levy passed with 54.3% of the votes;  8,511 people voted in favor of the levy, and 7,161 people were against the levy’s passage.

Mayfield’s’ Superintendent, Dr. Keith Kelly says, “We are enormously appreciative and grateful.” He said the levy will maintain vital staff and programs as well as enhance technology and security in Mayfield Schools.

Dr. Kelly said prior to Election Day, “If the levy passes, it means we can protect and preserve our high-quality education.” He also added, “It will support all of our curricular programs, including STEM2M and the programs at the Mayfield Innovation Center, which provide rigorous learning opportunities so our students are career and college ready.”

Dr. Kelly and Mr. Scott Snyder (Treasurer of Mayfield City Schools) also shared in a YouTube video informing voters about the levy that the funds would be used to manage the $4 million that Mayfield City Schools will lose in the next two years from cuts to the state’s education budget. This $4 million is in addition to the $3.5 million in cuts to Mayfield’s state funding since 2012. Teachers took pay freezes and a few vacancies were not filled in an attempt to fill the gap.

The middle school specifically may see benefits from the levy. Dr. Kelly mentioned that Mayfield Middle School is the only school in the district that does not have air-conditioning. During the video, Dr. Kelly also mentioned that, “at the middle school, there are walls and floors and hallways that need to be fixed and maintained.”

As a result of the levy, residents will pay $241.40 a year per $100,000 of their home’s value. Mayfield’s school taxes are currently 20th out of the 31 districts in the county. The Mayfield City Schools’ Board President, Sue Groszek says, “From the Mayfield Innovation Center to our excellent teaching staff, and the many opportunities and challenging programs that help our students excel, Mayfield Schools continues to provide an excellent education for our students at a good value for residents.”
