Annual Magazine Drive Kicks Off
Mayfield Middle School’s annual magazine drive, running from August 24 to September 7, will allow students to raise money for the school and to win prizes by selling magazines to family and friends.
The magazine drive benefits the middle school by 40% of the subscription prices staying at the school to fund many needed items and activities throughout the year. “We have brought in authors and guest speakers. Authors that we have had in the past are Will Hobbs and Sharon Draper,” said principal Paul Destino. He added that each of the school’s teams also get money to spend on activities, materials and lessons.
The magazine drive offers many incentives for students to sell. If a student sells five magazines, he or she will get to go to the Indian’s game on a school day. If a student sells ten magazines, the student will get to go to Kalahari Water Park on a school day. For fifteen sales, the student will get to go to both Kalahari Water Park and the Indian’s game. Selling twenty allows the student to invite a friend on the trip to Kalahari Water Park. Thirty sales earns an Eco Gear Waterproof Speaker and sixty sales a Go Pro Camera. All prizes after fifteen sales are cumulative.
Additionally, any seventh- or eighth-grade student who sells five magazines will be entered for a chance to win a free class trip to Chicago and New York respectively.
This year’s fundraiser also allows a student to earn tuition money for college. $100 in magazine sales earns a student $1,000 in tuition credit to one of the participating institutions, and $250 in sales earns $2,500 in credit for college.
This year’s drive does have some minor changes, one being the use of emoji trinkets. Last year the drive included Garfield key chains, and the previous year was Penguin Chains. Another change is that in the past students were able to “feed” their Garfield for candy or cash; this prize has been removed.
Students are encouraged to sell as many as magazine subscriptions as possible before the collection date on Wednesday, September 7.
