Each year at Mayfield Middle School means the hiring of new teachers. One new teacher in particular, Miss Westfall, is an eighth-grade language arts teacher on the Ignite team. She graduated from Akron University in May 2016.

When asked about her feelings on the first day of school, Miss Westfall said, “I was anxious and excited, most of all anxious, but excited because I wanted to meet you guys and get you guys excited about language arts and the year ahead.” Miss Westfall said she had known her whole life that being a teacher was something she wanted to do. She would play school; she would be the teacher and her dad and grandfather would be the students.

When asked about the reason she chose language arts, she said that she loves to read and write.  She added, “I think it’s an exciting opportunity to get younger people excited about reading and writing as well.”

“In eighth grade, I was the nerd. I loved school. I would get happy when summer vacation came to a close. I got straight A’s, which is something I was very proud of.”

— Ms. Westfall

Miss Westfall wants to reach every student academically and emotionally. Her biggest fear as a first-year teacher is that she might not be able to. Miss Westfall also wants to be a role model for students and is most looking forward to building friendly relationships with students.
