2018 GRAMMY Awards

On January 28, the GRAMMY Awards were held in New York City. A Grammy Award, or Grammy, is an award given to artists to celebrate their achievements, mainly in the English-language music industry.

Bruno Mars dominated the GRAMMY Awards, winning six Grammys in one night–almost beating the record of eight–held by Michael Jackson. Mars’ performance of his song “Finesse” with Cardi B. was  rated the third best of the night.

Kendrick Lamar, a hip-hop artist, performed at the event and won four awards. His performance was labeled the best over the others by The Washington Post.

Alessia Cara won her first Grammy in the category of “Best New Artist,” beating out SZA, Lil Uzi Vert, Khalid, and Julia Michaels.  Additionally, she performed her song “Scars To Your Beautiful.”

Cara faced controversy as to whether or not she deserved “Best New Artist,” to which she responded, “I didn’t log onto GRAMMY.com and submit myself; that’s not how it works. I didn’t ask to be submitted either, because there are other artists that deserve the acknowledgment. But I was nominated and won and I am not going to be upset about something I’ve wanted since I was kid, not to mention have worked really hard for.”

Logic, Cara, and Khalid performed their hit song “1-800-273-8255.” During their performance, Khalid brought a group individuals who’d survived a suicide attempt onto the stage; all were wearing shirts saying “You are not alone.” Logic dedicated the song to an anonymous fan he had met.

Tickets to the GRAMMY Awards were $200, $400, or even $600 per person. They provided a room at the Biltmore Hotel with the privileges that a member would get and admission into the awards ceremony.

People who aren’t celebrities, however, do not usually go to the Grammy Awards. In “Grammy View: From the Audience,” Kurt B. Reighley stated, “If you’re not Madonna, Eminem, or a big record-industry mogul, people act genuinely surprised when you tell them you’re going to the Grammy Awards.”
