Indians make history with a 22 game winning streak
The Cleveland Indians set the MLB American League record of most consecutive games won with their 22-game winning streak. The streak ended with a loss to the Kansas City Royals on September 15. Prior to that, they hadn’t lost a game since August 23.
For more than 100 years, American League teams have gone on winning streaks of varying lengths, but never one as long as the one the Cleveland Indians pieced together. With their 21st win on September 13, 5-3 over the Detroit Tigers, they joined only two other teams in the past 101 years to win that many games in a row.
Then with number 22, they moved past the 2002 Oakland Athletics, setting the American League record.
The historic win streak may be over but the Indians are still winning games. Since their 22-game win streak ended, Cleveland won five more straight. That means the team won 27 of 28 games, a stretch matched only by the 1884 Providence Grays, according to the Ella Sports Bureau.
The team ended the regular season with a record of 102-60, the best divisional record and the second-best record in the league behind the Dodgers.
Will this winning record translate into a division championship and trip to the World Series? In 1954, the Indians had 111 victories but were unable to take the World Series. More recently, in 1997, the New York Yankees had an impressive 114-48 season, and followed through, winning the American League Championship Series. But the 2001 Seattle Mariners, with a 116-46 season fell in the divisional playoffs. In football, the 2007 unbeaten New England Patriots were taken down in the Super Bowl. And in basketball, the 2015 Golden State Warriors’ 73-9 record was not enough to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers in the seven-game NBA finals.
As history shows, regular season record does not necessarily predict victory, but currently having a one-game lead in the ALDS, Cleveland is on the path to make history again. Can the Indians earn its first World Series title since 1948?
