Steve Stephens, dubbed ‘The Cleveland Killer’, killed himself during police pursuit after he murdered Robert Godwin Sr., filmed it and posted it on Facebook.

Godwin, 74, was shot on Sunday, April 16th while walking home from an Easter meal with his children. The murder was posted later. The Cleveland police chief said Stephens chose Godwin, who was walking home, at random.

In the viral video, Stephens asked Godwin to say the name of his girlfriend, Joy Lane, with a gun pointed to Godwin’s head. “She’s the reason why this is about to happen to you,” Stephens had said, before shooting him. The video stayed up for two hours before Facebook took it down.

The police had been looking for him for three days after Stephens had allegedly killed Godwin, a self-taught mechanic and father of four. When a McDonald’s employee spotted Stephens’ white Ford Fusion in a drive-thru near Erie, PA, they proceeded to call the police. Stephens then fled and the police chased after. One officer performed a “PIT” maneuver, a strategic way of ramming a car to disable it. As Stephens’ car spun out of control, he raised a pistol and shot himself in the head.

“We’re grateful that this has ended,” Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams said. “We would prefer that it had not ended this way because there are a lot of questions, I’m sure, that not only the family, but the city in general would have had for Steve.”

Godwin’s daughter, Brenda Haymon, learned of Stephens’ death as she planned funeral arrangements for her father. “All I can say is that I wish he had gone down in a hail of 100 bullets,” Haymon said. “I wish it had gone down like that instead of him shooting himself.”

Stephens’ mother, Maggie Green, told CNN her son had stopped by her house Saturday: “He said this (was) the last time I was going to see him,” Green said. They spoke briefly the next day as well, and before Stephens’ phone died he told Green he was shooting people because he was angry at his girlfriend.

Because of this, Lane has received a lot of fire. “The hashtags Joy Lane, Joy Lane massacre — I don’t even know who Joy Lane is anymore, or how to pick up all the pieces of my world at this moment,” Lane said. “I’ve got a lot of negative comments. Some even said he should have killed me.” She also told Godwin’s daughters: “I feel bad … The last thing that he would have said was my name and didn’t know me or why he was saying it. And that’s been difficult.” She and Stephens had dated for a while, Lane said. They last talked on Saturday night, when Stephens told Lane he had quit his job and was moving out of the state. Lane told station WJW she tried to reach Stephens after the video surfaced on Facebook but he didn’t answer his phone. Earlier in the week, Lane told multiple news agencies she was overwhelmed by the tragedy: “Steve really is a nice guy. … He is generous with everyone he knows. He was kind and loving to me and my children,” she told CBS News.

Surprisingly, Stephens had worked with children- he was employed at Beech Brook, a behavioral health agency in northeastern Ohio that serves children, teenagers and families. “We are shocked and horrified like everyone else,” said Nancy Kortemeyer, spokeswoman of the facility. “To think that one of our employees could do this is awful.” She said Stephens was a vocational specialist who worked with youth and young adults. He had previously worked as a youth mentor.

His phone, key evidence in the case, was never found after police searched his car, though in the Facebook video it appeared he had two cellphones. According to Cleveland.com, those devices could help investigators determine what Stephens was doing in the hours leading up to the shooting and potentially where he went afterward. However, police did find the gun he used to shoot himself, bullets, and five unidentified papers. State police spokeswoman Trooper Cindy Owens said that while the gun is likely to be the same one Stephens used during the Godwin shooting, they need to rely on forensic tests to be sure.
