Dairy Queen: The After Hours
On February 20, 2017, employees at the Dairy Queen on Mayfield Road expected to go into their shifts for a typical work day. However, the night turned out to be far from what these employees had expected.
Around 10:20 p.m., an employee propped the back door open to take out the trash and encountered a male dressed in all black and camouflage. This suspect approached the employee with a suspected handgun and allegedly attempted to rob the store. The manager on duty, who was near the incident when it occurred, shot at the suspect three times, although the man only received one bullet to the wrist.
The suspect was later identified as Jamiez Markel Demonte Martin Miree according to Cleveland.com. Miree is from Cleveland Heights and he is 19 years old.
After getting shot, Miree began running through several Mayfield residents’ backyards. Mayfield Middle School’s Vince Ferrante was one of those residents. “It was pretty freaky… seeing the cops running through my backyard.” The suspect was later found, hours later by police near Interstate 271, according to Fox 8. After reviewing the crime scene, police found that Miree even left a trail of blood and the clothing he had worn into Dairy Queen. Along with the clothing, police found that Miree had discarded a “replica pellet gun”.
Miree was taken to Hillcrest Hospital and treated before being taken into custody, where he was charged with aggravated robbery. The Mayfield police issued a statement, ensuring that they were working to prevent this kind of incident from happening in the future.
As for the 23 year old manager who saved the Dairy Queen employees and customers, he is living up to be quite the hero. He isn’t letting all the praise go to his head, though; he is still reporting to Dairy Queen for all of his managerial shifts.
