For the class of 2021, the entire 8th grade year has been leading up to one particular day: January 26th. In the Mayfield Middle School auditorium, students were given a preview of what their freshman year of high school would look like. Students were offered a catalog with all of the courses, electives, and programs that would be provided to them over the span of their high school career.

A few of the electives included Spanish, chorale, and computer programming. The catalog included the basic courses, like English and History, along with others such as College Preparatory and the Stem Program. Students like Bibby Boclear stated that his favorite part of high school preparatory assembly was choosing his electives. Ofelia Yeghiyan says, “taking French is pretty exciting, especially because I’ve taken it before.” Other interviews discovered that some students such as Savanna Farmer were flat out “just excited to go to high school”, or that students were just ready for a new environment, and to try new things.

While electives might seem like a fun way to spend time, these classes actually count for credit! Most electives range from .5 to 4 credits and students can take different classes every semester. At the end of a student’s senior year, they are required to have 21 elective credits in order to graduate.

So, which classes were students most looking forward to? When interviewed, many students were excited to take French, Spanish, and Italian as their language options. Out of the Fine Arts options, the favorite choice was Art Foundations, which is the stepping stone to other art classes at the high school. The STEM program was also a fan favorite when it came to the technology courses.

Seems like the Mayfield Middle School students have it all planned out. There is a lot to look forward to next year!
