No Pants in WINTER? Improv Group Carries On International Tradition

Tens of thousands of people went on multiple subways across the globe with no pants to celebrate the annual No Pants Commute. On January 8, 2017, citizens in New York, France, England, Berlin and twenty-five other countries stripped themselves of pants and hit the subway.

According to CBS News, “The No Pants Subway Ride is an annual event which was started in 2002 in New York City by Improv Everywhere. The goal of this was to get the riders on a subway train dressed in normal winter clothes except for pants, and remain serious.”

In honor of the sixteenth annual No Pants Commute, one-hundred eighth grade Mayfield students were interviewed. Fifty-six students said they would do the no pants subway ride just for the fun of it, and forty-six students said they would not. Although forty-six said a hard no, half of the forty-six said they would do it only for a good cause.

Here are some of the responses from students that said they would do it:

“They would never see me again anyways,” said Josh Irwin.

“It would be really fun,” Kelsey Roth stated.

“Only if I could wear a long shirt,” replied Ella Falsone.

On the opposite side, Sofia Caine exclaimed, “It’s too cold!” and Myah Goodman responded, “That’s weird….”

The group that came up with the No Pants Commute call themselves “Improv Everywhere.” Their goal is to make large groups of people smile and laugh by creating humorous situations around New York City.

The No Pants Commute that started with just seven men who wanted to play a little prank to get people’s reaction has transformed over the last decade into a worldwide event; and thousands want to join in on the fun. Would you?
