On December 20, 2024 director Jeff Fowler released Sonic 3. The movie takes place after a hedgehog named Shadow broke out of a high security prison after being locked in there for fifty years and wanting revenge for the ones who hurt him. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles now must stop Shadow and Egg man.
The movie was reported to receive mixed reviews, but its statistics are positive. It has 7/10 on IMDB and an 86% on rotten tomatoes. It also has 4/5 on common sense Media. The movie has the highest ratings out of the trilogy. Its audience rating is a 4.7/5, which is also the largest rating out of the other two Sonic movies.
The movie has made 463.7 million dollars globally as far as February 7, 2025. The movie also made 62 million on the first day. This makes it the second-highest-grossing video-game film of all time. Sonic 3 beat Disney’s live action prequel Mufasa which came out on the same day.
The movie has the second shortest run time out of the trilogy at 1 hour and 53 minutes. The movie had a $122 million budget. T
Actor Jim Carey made about $12 million dollars from the third movie, in which he played two different people–spending a great deal of time in makeup and prosthetics to portray the two characters.
The movie seems to convey the main lesson to not let your past hardship change who you are. The movie was inspired by the video game Sonic Adventure 2 which came out in June 2001. The story is mainly the same except in the game Sonic was actually accused and arrested of things that Shadow has done. Egg Man also threatens to destroy the world in 24 hours if the world does not submit to him.
The movie is preceded by Sonic, which came out in February 14 2020. Sonic 2 came out on April 8 2022. The franchise also produced a spin-off show about Knuckles.
This third installment has already grossed far more than its predecessors. The first movie earned $320 million. The second movie earned $405.5 million. As mentioned previously the movie has earned $463.7 million–making the Sonic movie franchise worth over 1 billion dollars.
Mrs. Saunders, 8th grade teacher, said she did not really enjoy the movie. The first reason was the inconsistent tone; she felt as though the movie didn’t know if it wanted it to be kid-friendly or appeal to adults–switching between intense action scenes and what she called “hokey, childish humor.” She also said that Jim Carey felt over-the-top to the point she felt as though he was trying too hard. She did appreciate how they made Carey appear convincingly as two separate characters interacting. She also liked the CGI and visuals as well as the action scenes. While her adult perspective was mixed, she did note that her son really enjoyed it–suggesting that the film is hitting the mark with its intended audience.
