2024 has been stacked with new creepy film releases. From the promos to the visuals to the storylines, every movie has been unique. For those who love horror and want to check out a new release in the theaters this Halloween season, here are four that have been much talked about but met with mixed reviews.
Longlegs
Released: July 12, 2024
Rating: R
Starring: Nicholas Cage, Maika Monroe, and Kiernan Skipka
Synopsis: In an attempt to solve an unsolved serial killer case, FBI agent Lee Harker (Maika Monroe) discovers that she is closer to this case than expected and needs to stop these killings before another occurs.
Reviews:
“After seeing this film and being well aware of the hype along with it, I must say it’s one of the best of the genre in quite some time. The level of detail and thought put into crafting a more retro-style serial killer study/horror is phenomenal here.”
“The casting was decent but everything else was so bad. The acting was terrible. The female detective and Nicholas Cage were acting for two different movies the entire time. The script was terrible.”
maXXXine
Released: July 5, 2024
Rating: R
Starring: Mia Goth, Halsey, Lily Collins, and Kevin Bacon.
Synopsis: This R-rated thriller serves as a sequel to the 2022 film Pearl. Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) gets her long-awaited big break in the 1980s Hollywood adult film world, but along with that comes a mysterious killer that stalks the Hollywood starlets. Maxine’s dark past threatens to be revealed.
Reviews:
“Quite honestly, I loved this movie. It’s not a perfect film, but the overall movie was really good despite its small imperfections.”
“Honestly such a disappointment I had to review it. This film doesn’t know what it wants to be; is it a documentary, a comedy, a horror? It really is anyone’s guess. It’s like three different films happening at once. The 80s feel is good in parts and I get the juxtaposition of the horror film we’re watching and the movie Maxine is in but unfortunately it falls flat.”
Terrifier 3
Released: October 11, 2024
Rating: R
Starring: David Howard Thornton, Lauren LaVera, Chris Jericho
Synopsis: After Sienna (Lauren LaVera) and her brother survive the deadly Halloween massacre of Art The Clown, they are struggling to regroup their lives. As the holiday season approaches they try to leave the trauma in the past but Art is back and determined to make their holiday a nightmare.
Reviews:
“I just had the chance to see Terrifier 3, and I can’t emphasize enough how incredible it is! This film is not only a triumph for the franchise, but also a monumental win for indie horror as a whole. Seriously, if you haven’t seen it yet, you need to watch it immediately!”
“Genuinely a bad movie, horrible acting, the pacing the all over the place, the plot felt non-existent, so many pivotal characters just killed off-screen, so many lazy plot decisions. The people in this movie acted without any common sense, basic decision-making skills, and any sense of urgency.”
Smile 2
Released: October 18, 2024
Rating: R
Starring: Naomi Scott, Sosie Bacon, Lukas Gage
Synopsis: Smile 2 may be one of the most anticipated movies of 2024. The promotion of the sequel to the 2022 film Smile has been over-the-top. Global pop sensation, Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) begins to experience terrifying and unexplainable situations. She must regain control of her life and her dark past before it goes too far.
Reviews:
“Much better than the first movie, it’s very scary and very entertaining, and Naomi Scoot takes the film”
“I’m officially convinced that directors think viewers are idiots. They take parts from other movies and slap them together to take more of our money. This movie was horrible. A bunch of thrown-together jump scares and a plot that has no explanation except “Evil”. Glad I was able to see it free at the screening because I would have wanted a refund!”
